Our Programs

Through various sustainability initiatives in collaboration with our coalition partners, we have deepened our relationships with local coconut growers in the regions where our supply chains operate. These projects are designed to equip coconut farmers with the necessary knowledge, tools, and support to enhance their livelihoods and optimize their productivity, while also assisting our partners in advancing sustainability within their supply chains.

Furthermore, our internal sustainability endeavors are focused on maintaining our commitment to implementing low-carbon, sustainable, and climate-resilient practices in alignment with the core values of Franklin Baker.

SDG COCO

Raising the Bar on Coconut Farming

The Sustainable Development and Good Agricultural Practices in the Philippine Coconut Supply Chain (SDG Coco) initiative is a partnership between Symrise, The Absolut Company (Malibu), and GIZ, with efforts focusing on fostering continuous farm improvement and supporting the sustainability of the nut supply chain. One of the goals of this collaboration is enhancing farmer income and overall farm productivity through capacity development, implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and intercropping techniques. The program also places a strong emphasis on improving delivery services to farmers by establishing farm demonstration sites and facilitating market linkages.

SDG COCO +

Enhancing Regenerative, and Climate-resilient Farming

SDG Coco+ is the second phase of the SDG Coco program, still in cooperation with Symrise, The Absolut Company and GIZ. Building on the success of Phase 1, it focuses on turning learnings into action, while helping farmers adopt low-carbon, regenerative agriculture practices. By doing so, SDG Coco+ promotes climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and long-term self-reliance among coconut farmers. It also supports farmers in strengthening the skills they developed in Phase 1 and helps make those changes permanent. Additionally, the program includes improvements in occupational health and safety to better protect workers in the field.

COCO 1

Building Farmer Resilience

A joint project with Mars, and in partnership with Livelihood Funds for Family Farming (L3F) and Integrated Rural Development Fund (IRDF), we help farmers organize associations and train them on sustainable farming practices such as multi-cropping and replanting techniques to improve farming skills that can help increase farm output and thus, income. We also actively involve the younger generation as we create opportunities for family members to gain employment and undertake small business ventures.

COCO 2

Crafting a Thriving Coconut Platform

Another project with L3F and IRDF, this time with Danone, the program aims to support long-term viability of organic coconut production, by helping guarantee long-term market access through direct sourcing. It includes digital application of traceability at farm sites and empowering women and youth farmers, as well as small business entrepreneurs, by exploring ways to fully utilize coconut parts and transform coconut waste into marketable products, thus adding value to coconut production cycle.

RUN FOR COCONUT FARMERS

Purpose in Every Step

The Franklin Baker Run for Coconut Farmers is more than just a fun run. It’s a movement with purpose, supporting the hardworking coconut farmers who are at the heart of what we do.

Through the collective efforts of participants, sponsors, and partners, proceeds from the run go directly to initiatives that uplift the lives of our partner farmers, farm workers, and their families. These include the distribution of essential goods like groceries and farm tools, as well as access to training programs, seminars, and capacity-building workshops designed to improve farming practices, increase productivity, and open up new livelihood opportunities.

By joining the run, participants become part of a larger mission: supporting Filipino coconut farmers, strengthening rural communities, and building a more sustainable future for the industry.

FAIR TRADE PREMIUM PROJECTS

Fruits of Ethical Practices

The additional revenue earned by our Fair Trade-certified farms is allocated to initiatives that prioritize community development, based on the needs identified by the farmers themselves.

Key initiatives focus on improving safe working conditions, environmental protection, and supporting sustainable livelihoods through capacity-building programs, better access to education and healthcare, and alternative income-generating activities.

Managed by farmer cooperatives, these projects enhance the quality of life for coconut farmers and their families, fostering more equitable, sustainable, and resilient farming communities.

SOLAR POWERED PLANTS

Solutions for a Brighter Future

In 2021, we took a significant step forward in our sustainability journey by installing solar panel systems at all three of our plant facilities. This initiative was driven by our dual commitment to reducing operational costs and minimizing our environmental impact.

Each system is equipped with advanced photovoltaic (PV) cells that capture sunlight and convert it into clean, renewable electricity. This solar energy now powers a significant portion of our production processes—helping us reduce our dependence on traditional energy sources and lower our greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the installation of solar panels also supports our long-term goal of achieving greater energy efficiency and resilience. This initiative is just one of the many ways we’re integrating sustainable practices into every level of our operations—ensuring we protect the planet while continuing to deliver world-class products.

COCONUT SHELL POWERED BROILERS

Turning Waste into Power

At Franklin Baker, sustainability is embedded in everything we do—including how we treat every part of the coconut. Once we’ve extracted the water and meat for our products, the coconut shells don’t go to waste. Instead, they are repurposed as a renewable energy source to fuel our broilers across our processing plants.

By using coconut shells to power our broilers, we significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels like coal. This practice not only lowers greenhouse gas emissions but also ensures that we minimize waste throughout our operations. What would otherwise be discarded becomes a valuable resource—helping us close the loop and operate more efficiently.

  • Average Yearly Bunker Fuel Usage Eliminated (2018 – 2021): 337,587 L / year
  • Total Yearly CO2 Avoided: 2,561 Tons
